UK firms unprepared for flexible working

A recent survey suggests that many organisations are not prepared for forthcoming changes in UK employment law, which will increase employees' rights to apply for flexible working.

The survey, carried out by employee management specialist, Crown Computing, also found that more than three quarters of the 111 HR professionals questioned felt the British workforce is not aware of the new rights – which are to be introduced on April 6 – and therefore are unlikely to understand what they can and cannot request.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through new employment legislation and its Work Life Balance initiative, is trying to encourage the growth of flexible working in the UK. Crown Computing has released a white paper entitled 'Limbering up for Flexible Working' which aims to outlines the impact of the flexible working legislation and provides advice on how companies can respond to the changes it will bring.

Belfast College To Loose 200 Staff
Belfast Metropolitan College has confirmed it is likely to shed more than 200 jobs in restructuring plans. The college has finished a 90-day consultation period with unions about the plans - although it also admitted that talks had "broken down". A statement issued on Tuesday said 120 full-time and 93 part time positions are under threat.
