O'Dowd Opens New Irish-Language School Facilities

Education Minister John O’Dowd has officially opened the new £1.68m facilities for Scoil na Fuiseoige in Belfast.

The state-run school provides learning and education in the Irish language for boys and girls aged between 3 and 11.

Speaking during the opening of the new facilities, the Minister said: "I am honoured to have been invited by Scoil na Fuiseoige to perform the official opening of the school’s fantastic new premises. My Department has invested more than £1.68m in the new facilities, which will enable the school to move from strength to strength as it approaches its third decade providing education through the medium of Irish to young people in the local area.

"Irish-medium education is flourishing right across the north of Ireland and is more popular than ever. I am committed to ensuring that parents here continue to have the choice to educate their children in what is our native language. Children who are bilingual from a young age have a strong foundation for future learning in any subject, and often pick up other languages with ease."

The Minister concluded: "I would like to thank all of those involved with the construction of the new school and wish all the pupils, staff, Governors and everyone connected with the school every success as they look to the future."
