NI Secretary In American Visit

The Northern Ireland Secretary of State has visited New York to meet key figures in Irish America.

Theresa Villiers praised the US for its dealings with Northern Ireland over the years, particularly with regards to the peace process.

Ms Villiers met representatives of the American-Ireland Fund, which is responsible for raising millions of dollars for organisations throughout Ireland working towards peace, reconciliation, education and community development.

The NI Secretary also met with members of the New York Bar Association along with representatives of the Irish American political and business communities.

She was speaking regarding her responsibilities and priorities in her position as Secretary of State and said she would be working with the Northern Ireland Executive and co-operating with the Irish Government on a wide range of issues.

"I welcome the commitment that successive US governments and many Americans have given to Northern Ireland over the years,” said Ms Villiers.

“I am pleased to have this opportunity to highlight the progress that has been made in Northern Ireland and to set out my key priorities to rebalance the economy and to make Northern Ireland a safer place."

Theresa Villiers was guest of honour at a lunch hosted by UK consul general Danny Lopez. The discussion amongst leading business figures and entrepreneurs focused on the Northern Ireland economy and the role of New York-based businesses.

There was also an exploration of future plans and opportunities.
