New 'Areas at Risk' Announced

10 new areas have been announced for Northern Ireland’s 'Areas at Risk' programme.

Areas at Risk was launched in June 2006 and is intended support to communities which are at risk of economic, social or environmental decline.

It focuses on areas that fall outside the 10% most disadvantaged and are at risk of falling further into decline

The programme has already supported 27 areas across towns and cities in Northern Ireland.

The new areas to be targeted by the scheme include Bessbrook and Crossmaglen in County Armagh, Old Warren, Hillhall, Carnmoney, Monkstown, Mossley and Northlands in County Antrim, Cross Glebe in County L’derry and Glenbank in Belfast.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has welcomed the news. He said: "The Areas at Risk Programme provides assistance to communities that are at risk of social, economic or environmental decline.

"It is clear from feedback that I have received, and as a result of my visits to a number of communities, that this is a much needed programme that is helping to create stronger, communities which everyone can feel part of."

The programme has an annual budget of £1m and each area will receive support for a maximum of two years.
