NI Economy To Benefit From £200m Funding

£200m of funding from the Executive is to be injected into the Northern Ireland economy to boost employment.

The measures will include waged employment opportunities for 1,700 young people for at least six months.

It will also see about 1,100 long-term unemployed people over 50 provided with employment in the community and voluntary sector for 26 weeks.

3,500 businesses are set to benefit from a 20% small business rate relief scheme.

900 additional young people will be given places in the Youth Employment Scheme, while 500 undergrad places are to be created in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Car parking charges in towns and city centres will be frozen until 2015 and £15m will be made available for the Single Farm Payment.

The construction sector is also to get a much-needed boost to the tune of £40m, while the maintenance budget for schools will be increased by £10m in 2013/14.

First Minister Peter Robinson said the funding was intended to "grow the economy and contribute to rising levels of employment".

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, said: "These employment measures are particularly focused on the needs of young people to help them get into work.

"The Executive is already committed to delivering over £5bn of capital investment in the current budget period. To boost employment in the construction sector this package will deliver a range of new measures to improve our schools, roads and accelerate nearly £60m of capital projects."

£1.5m Funding To Boost Employment
£1.5m funding has been released by the Department for Employment and Learning to boost employment and learning opportunities. The Skills Collaboration fund was launched today by Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry. The fund will focus on employer-led projects and on enhancing skills competitions.
