Legal Challenge Over Transfer Test Ended
The parents of a special needs pupil who is due to sit the transfer test have ended a legal challenge to the level of provisions offered.
Proceedings were issued at the High Court in Belfast on claims that a body which oversees one of the unofficial entrance exams had discriminated on the grounds of disability.
This was the first case of its kind since the 11 plus exam was abolished and individual tests were put in its place.
This year’s tests are to take place on Saturday and will involved thousands of pupils across Northern Ireland.
Although the exact nature of the child’s disabilities has not been disclosed, a judge was told that an educational psychologist had described the child as being of "unique" circumstances.
Lawyers claimed an offer of an extra 15 minutes to complete the one-hour test was insufficient.
They also claimed additional access arrangements were unsatisfactory.
It had been alleged at an earlier court hearing that there ad been a refusal, or failure, to make the proper arrangements to accommodate the child.
Further arguments were due to take place today, but a senior counsel for the child's family instead confirmed that the case was not continuing.
