Legal Aid To Be Cut For Civil Cases

The Justice Minister, David Ford, has taken the first step to cut the amount of legal aid paid to barristers and solicitors in civil cases.

His department has outlined proposals to save millions of pounds in a range of cases such as child custody battles and divorces.

Under the plans, fewer barristers would be appointed to civil court disputes.

The bill for civil legal aid cases in Northern Ireland last year was just over £53m.

Irish Minister Addresses DUP Conference

Simon Coveney, the Republics Minister for Agriculture, has become the first Irish government minister to attend and address a DUP conference.

Mr Coveney was the keynote speaker at the event, which began in Belfast on Friday.

It follows from junior DUP minister, Jonathan Bell, accepting an invitation to address the conference of Mr Coveney's party, Fine Gael, earlier this year.

North Belfast Bomb Alert

A number of families have been moved from their homes in north Belfast following a bomb alert on Friday afternoon.

Houses in Northwick Drive were evacuated after a suspicious object was found in the garden of a house.

The road has been closed to traffic as Army bomb officers examine the scene.

'No Bonuses' For Public Sector Bosses
Senior Northern Ireland civil servants will not receive bonuses this year, The Stormont Finance Minister Sammy Wilson has said. Mr Wilson said he had considered all "relevant factors" - including public debate over public sector pay - and decided to cut the award scheme to top level workers.

Arlene Foster Nominated To Be New DUP Leader
Arlene Foster has been nominated to be the new DUP leader after Peter Robinson announced in November he is to step down. DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds has also confirmed he will not put his name forward for the position as he is not a member of the Stormont Assembly.

Funeral Of Ian Paisley To Be Held
The funeral of Ian Paisley is to be held today in County Down, following a private funeral service at his home in East Belfast. The former DUP leader and First Minister died on Friday, aged 88.

A public consultation has now been launched seeking views on a Baby Loss Certificate Scheme, which will be open to parents who have experienced the loss of a baby prior to the end of the 24th week of pregnancy.

Politicians Help 'Kick Hate Into Touch'
An innovative campaign, the 'Unite Against Hate' sporting weekend has been launched. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and his Junior Minister Gerry Kelly (pictured) joined forces to support the campaign which highlights all forms of hate crime and challenges people here to unite to stop it.
