Record Number Take Part In Over 300 NI Events

Environment Minister Alex Attwood has confirmed that 61,100 people took part in over 300 events across Northern Ireland during this year's European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) in September.

The event, which is a once a year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy tours and events that bring our history and culture to life, is organised by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

Speaking at an event to thank owners and custodians who opened their homes and properties over the weekend, the Minister said: "European Heritage Open Days celebrates the rich diversity of Northern Ireland’s built heritage by offering free access to properties that are normally closed to the public or usually charge admission.

"The open days could not happen without the many building owners and volunteers who open their properties and arrange activities. Once a year they generously throw open their doors offering the public a rare chance to see behind the facades of some of our historic buildings.

"This year we attracted a record number of visitors which is a reflection of the popularity of our built heritage. I believe that our built and natural heritage will be the biggest part of future increases in tourist numbers and spend."
