Small Business Rate Relief Scheme Welcomed
SDLP MLA for Newry and Armagh Dominic Bradley has welcomed a statement from Finance Minister Sammy Wilson today regarding the extension of support regarding the Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) Scheme.
Mr Bradley said: "At a time when small businesses, especially town centres, are under huge pressure and any measure which helps them survive is to be welcome. The extension of the 50% exemption for first year for new business moving into a long term unoccupied property is particularly helpful.
"This measure will encourage more people into business and help create jobs in town centres. The extension of the Small Business Rate Relief (SBRR) scheme will take in properties with a rateable value of up to £15,000.
"This will be awarded to all eligible small businesses automatically without the need for an application. The continuation of support for rural ATMs for the remainder of the budget period is also welcome.
"This will encourage more people to use local shops. Research shows that cash withdrawn in local areas is spent locally which in town sustains services in local communities. Manufacturing rates will remain at 30% and Empty property relief at 50%.
"The SDLP welcomes the Finance Ministers intention to proceed with non-domestic rates revaluation in 2015. This will help to re-distribute the rates burden in a more equitable manner and hopefully benefit smaller businesses and town centres."
