Men In Court Over Rioting

Six men have appeared in court in Belfast charged with rioting.

The men are accused over their involvement in the violent protests which followed the decision last week to only fly the union flag above Belfast City Hall on designated days.

Unionists argue their cultural identity has been attacked by the move, while the PSNI claims UDA and UVF members were responsible for rioting throughout last week.

Martin Edgeworth, 41 of Linfield Avenue, Belfast, was accused of attacking a police Land Rover with part of a chair at Shaftesbury Square on Friday.

Mark Nicholl, Christopher Thompson, Alan Joseph, Paul Heaney, all 19, David Crooks, 18 and James Colgan, 22, have been charged with rioting at Rathcoole, Newtownabbey, on Saturday night.

All six men have been released on £500 bail on condition of a 20:00 to 07:00 curfew.

Judge Fiona Bagnall said she may consider relaxing the curfews if tensions within the community subside.

The accused have also been ordered not to come within 500 metres of any parade or protest.

All six men are due to appear in court again in the New Year.
