More NI Census Stats Revealed

Further results from the 2011 census have been released today by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA)

The figures show the Census Day population of Northern Ireland increased by 7.5% to 1.811m between 2001 and 2011.

The proportion of children aged under 16 has fallen from 24% in 2001 to 21% in 2011.

The proportion of people aged 65 and over rose from 13% to 15% over the same period.

The amount of minority ethnic groups in Northern Ireland has more than doubled since 2001, rising from 0.8% to 1.8%.

40% of residents had a British-only national identity, 25% Irish and 21% Northern Irish.

48% of people included British as a national identity, while 29% included Northern Irish and 28% included Irish.

The proportion of the population born outside Northern Ireland rose from 9% in 2001 to 11% 2011.

59% of people in Northern Ireland held a UK passport while 21% held an Irish passport and 19% held no passport.

English was not the main language for 3.1% of residents aged 3 years and over, almost one quarter of whom (24%) lived in Belfast.

The most prevalent main language other than English was Polish, at 1.0%.

11% had some ability in Irish in 2011, compared with 10% in 2001, while 8.1% of people had some ability in Ulster-Scots.

17% either had No Religion or Religion Not Stated.

But the rates for the main religions were: Catholic at 41%, Presbyterian at 19%, 14% for Church of Ireland, Methodist 3%, Other Christian or Christian-related denominations 5.8% and Other Religions and Philosophies 0.8%.

45% of the population were either Catholic or brought up as Catholic, while 48% belonged to or were brought up in Protestant, Other Christian or Christian-related denominations.

Sinn Fein confident of rise in Irish speakers
Speaking ahead of the publication of the 2001 Northern Ireland census, Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Barry McElduff has said that he expects the census to show a big rise in the use of the Irish language. The results from the long-anticipated population count are expected to be published tomorrow.

NI Clinic To Offer Abortions
Next week will see the opening of the first ever private clinic to offer abortions in Northern Ireland. The service will be operating from the centre of Belfast from 18 October and will be run by Marie Stopes. Under Northern Irish law, abortions are not completely illegal, but are heavily controlled.

Irish Govt Commits To Invest €800m In Northern Ireland
The announcement of an €800 million (£685m) investment in Northern Ireland by the Irish Government has been welcomed as a "significant contribution" by Finance Minister, Dr Caoimhe Archibald MLA.
