Appointment Of New IERC Centre Director
Tyndall National Institute has announced the appointment of Professor Tony Day as the Director of the International Energy Research Centre (IERC).
The IERC is a new, industry-led, collaborative centre of excellence established to drive commercially focused innovations in integrated energy systems, and will be hosted at Tyndall National Institute in Cork.
Prof Day has joined IERC from his role as Professor of Energy in the Built Environment at London South Bank University and Director of the Centre for Efficient and Renewable Energy in Buildings. He has extensive research and industry consultancy experience in energy technology analysis, as well as measurement and verification of energy systems performance and strategic energy policy development in the UK.
During his career to date, he has been responsible for developing innovative energy research facilities, new commercial services, and best practice guidance that can respond to the fast changing needs of the energy sector. As a Chartered Engineer he is a problem solver, with a keen understanding of business practice and of the processes for energy policy development.
He is currently leading the Task Group for the European Standard for Energy Audits in Buildings, was Chair of the UK Solar Energy Society 2010 – 2012, and has an extensive publications record in the field.
Commenting on this strategic appointment, Tyndall Chairman Dr Alastair Glass stated:"With such a strong track record in the energy space, Prof Day's extensive leadership experience in the field will help deliver high impact solutions to real-world energy problems and will play a pivotal role in the international development of IERC in the years ahead."
Brendan McDonagh, Director of Planning in IDA commented: "The Centre is a game changer in that it will generate additional investment from Multinational companies and will support the development of indigenous companies in the energy efficiency related area. We anticipate jobs and investments to follow from the commercialised focus of the research work."

Potential For 'Green' Jobs, Says De Brun
The green economy should be at the heart of government programmes, according to Sinn Féin's Bairbre de Brún, who said energy efficiency schemes could create much-needed jobs for the ailing construction sector. The newly re-elected MEP appeared before the Climate Change Inquiry held by the Assembly Environment Committee last week.

A three-year energy initiative could create up to 1,000 new jobs, the Irish Rural Affairs Minister has said. The Western Development Commission’s Wood Energy Initiative could also generate an additional €15m per annum for rural area.
