Man Jailed For Car Bomb Attack

A man from L'Derry has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after admitting playing an 'active role' in a car bomb attack.

Philip O'Donnell, 44, is to spend half his sentence in jail and the other half on licence, Belfast Crown court Judge Mr Justice Burgess ordered.

He said: "Given the nature of these offences and the terror and threat to life in this attack, the dissident group showed itself only too willing to resort to violence in pursuit of its aims and in doing so resorted to this highly dangerous act of causing an explosion of this magnitude."

A bomb was planted in a car outside the city's Strand Road police station in August 2010.

No-one was injured in the attack.

O'Donnell also pleaded guilty to several other charges.
