Men Arrested Over Teenager's Murder

Two men have been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of 19-year-old Jason McGovern.

Mr McGovern, of Tydavnet in County Monaghan, was punched at a pub on John Street, Omagh, on Sunday.

He was then attacked again some time later at the Cunningham Terrace car park, before making his way to a friend’s house in Mullan village near Emyvale.

Mr McGovern was found dead at the property on Monday.

Two men aged 18 and 21 were arrested in Omagh on Wednesday.

The PSNI are reported to be investigating the incident with the support of Gardai.

A post mortem examination found Mr McGovern’s death was caused by a head injury sustained during the attack.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses, particularly taxi drivers and motorists who were at the Weigh Inn car park in Omagh.

Police would especially like to talk to two middle-aged men who helped Jason into a taxi with his friend following the assault.

Omagh SDLP councillor Dr Josephine Deehan described the death as "shocking in the extreme".

"It is a parent's worst nightmare that your child could go out for an evening's entertainment and this sort of thing could happen," she said.

"There are issues that will need to be addressed. People need to do a lot of thinking about taking responsibility for their own actions and behaviour."
