Schoolboy Murder Convictions Quashed

Three men will face a retrial after their convictions for murdering a County Antrim schoolboy were declare unsafe.

Aaron Wallace, 23, Christopher Kerr 25, and Jeff Lewis, 22, all of Ballymena, were convicted of killing 15-year-old Michael McIlveen in May 2006.

Wallace and Lewis were originally found guilty of murder.

They were sentenced to jail for terms ranging from 10 to 13 years.

But the convictions were quashed when it was ruled the jury was wrongly directed towards its verdict.

Senior Appeal Court judges have now decided fresh proceedings should be brought against them.

Michael McIlveen died after being chased and attacked by a crowd in Ballymena in May 2006. He was attacked and beaten as he lay injured in an alleyway.

The case will begin at Antrim Crown Court on 28 January.
