Ombudsman Relaunches Troubles Investigation
Investigations into 150 murders left unsolved during the troubles are to begin again.
The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Dr Michael Maguire said new structures had been put in place to re-start the investigation into murders linked to the troubles.
Dr Maguire said: "Under the law, the PSNI's Historical Enquiries Team has had to refer certain incidents during the Troubles to my office for independent investigation. Members of the public across the community have also made complaints about serious matters, including deaths, during this period.
"It is important that these matters are dealt with."
The move follows the suspension of work on historical cases in September 2011.
The Criminal Justice Inspectorate (CJI) had raised concerns over the handling of controversial high profile cases.
It found some reports had been heavily influenced by feedback from non-governmental organisations, families, legal representatives and the PSNI.
But the CJI says its new report shows public confidence in the Police Ombudsman's office has been restored.
The Ombudsman's historic investigations unit, which works with a staff of 40 and an annual budget of £2m, will now investigate police involvement in criminality between 1968 and 1998.
The Criminal Justice Inspectorate was set up under the Good Friday Agreement to hold criminal justice agencies to account.
The bodies inspected include the police, courts, probation and prison services.

Appeal Following Fatal Collision In Broughshane
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information and witnesses following a fatal collision in Broughshane on Tuesday, 07 May. A 41-year-old man from the Glenarm area, named by the PSNI as Connor McNeill, was driving a grey Nissan X-Trail on the Carnlough Road when it left the carriageway shortly before 3.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

PSNI Names Woman Found Dead In East Belfast
A woman found dead at a house in east Belfast on Wednesday, 15 May, has been named by the PSNI as Kathryn 'Kat' Parton. A murder investigation has been launched into the death after Kathryn's body was discovered in a house in the Madrid Street area. The 34-year-old had suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
