Beggs Condemns 'Cheap Attacks' On Working People
Congress General Secretary David Begg has condemned the 'cheap attacks' on working people which he said had become a hallmark of the current crisis, in Ireland and across the European Union.
Begg said the failure to fashion a just resolution to the banking and budgetary crisis meant that the burden of adjustment had fallen almost entirely on low to middle–income earners, in both private and public sectors.
Speaking at the Inaugural Edward Phelan Lecture in Dublin, Begg said: "We failed – at a national and European level – to fashion a just response to this crisis. As a society we also failed to have a clear and reasoned debate on where the burden of adjustment should fall, with the result that cheap attacks on working people have become the norm: attacks on their incomes and living standards, be they in the public or private sector.
"We have seen attacks on the Minimum Wage and on the systems that set rates for the low paid in the private sector, allied with attacks on the income and conditions of public sector workers made by people who should know better."

Jobs Are Saved in Buy-Out
Many jobs have been saved at a company in Co Antrim. The firm, Westport Resources Limited - which is a driver hire contractor - went into administration at the beginning of the month but now, news of the sale of the company being arranged last week has emerged and all 277 people working at the company will now keep their posts.

Unemployment Up - But More People Are Working
Although still under the UK average, unemployment in Northern Ireland has gone up again. The numbers of people who are deemed 'economic inactive' has also continued to rise. However, on the plus side, the numbers actually in work rose again by 1,000 to 781,000 over the quarter and 9,000 on the year.

The Government has announced a radical reform of the welfare state aiming to get people off benefits and back into work. The Green paper aims to end the legacy of benefit dependency and deprivation that has damaged communities across Britain. The government’s goal is to achieve an ambitious 80per cent employment rate for people of working age.
