2.1% Sales Increase For Sainsbury's
Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has reported a 2.1% rise in sales for the year to 16 March and record customer numbers.
The figures reveal the best sales growth came from non-food products, where profit margins are generally higher, with clothing sales 20% above those of a year ago.
The full profit figures for the UK’s third-largest supermarket, after Tesco and Asda, will be published in May.
Sainsbury's said it expected the retail environment to remain tough for the rest of this year.
The company's chief executive, Justin King, said: "Valentine's Day and Mother's Day were both particularly strong this year, and we closed the quarter with a very successful Red Nose Day, presenting a record cheque for £10.5m on behalf of customers and colleagues."

CBI survey reveals shop sales remain strong
Retail sales remained strong in March but the annual rate of increase has edged down from the peaks over Christmas and the New Year, according to the CBI's latest monthly distributive trades survey. The survey, released on Tuesday April 2, was conducted between 5 and 20 March 2002 with 268 retail outlets taking part.

Sainsbury’s still behind Tesco’s after strong quarter
Despite a strong showing over the Easter holidays, Sainsbury's have been unable to overtake Tesco's as the UK's biggest supermarket group. Like-for-like sales rose 6.8% to March 30, and excluding petrol and excluding Easter like-for-like sales gained 6% overall, which is 0.2% down on rival Tesco's.
