Man Prosecuted Over Japanese Knotweed

A L'Derry man has been prosecuted for growing Japanese knotweed.

Daniel Derek Casey, 37, admitted growing the harmful plant in his garden.

The offence was committed on August 31 2012 during site clearing work at his home at Upper Galliagh Road.

A conditional discharge has been imposed for 12 months.

The incident was uncovered by employed builders who were carrying out work on the property.

Mr Casey's solicitor said his client did not know what the plant was.

Japanese knotweed was introduced into Britain in the 19th century as an ornamental plant. It is now widespread and can out-compete native plants and animals, making it a threat to ecosystems.
