NI Paralympian To Join Lagan Race

A Northern Irish paralympian gold-medalist is taking part in a race along the River Lagan on Wednesday evening.

Glengormley's Michael McKillop won Gold in the T37 800m and 1500m events at the Paralympic Games in London in 2012.

He is returning to compete in the Belfast event, which is a popular warm-up race ahead of the city's annual marathon.

The popular Powerade Queen’s 5k 'Race Around the River' runs alongside the River Lagan, covering two laps around the King’s Bridge and Ormeau Bridge.

Speaking ahead of the event, Mr McKillop said: "The Queen’s 5k Race allows you to challenge your personal best on a fast and exciting course on the River Lagan. Last year was a great year for me personally as it gave me the opportunity to compete against some of the best middle distance runners in the province as I prepared for London 2012."

Kevin Murray from organisers Queen’s Sport added: "We are delighted Michael McKillop is back again to compete in the Powerade Queen’s 5K Race Around the River as it is not often that so many people get the chance to compete in a race with a gold-medal winning paralympian.

"With several other race events across Northern Ireland having to be cancelled due to weather conditions in recent days, I would encourage those keen to assess their performance in the run up to the Belfast Marathon to come along and take part. We are accepting entries right up until the event and Michael’s participation will make an already enjoyable occasion even more special."
