L'Derry Walls To Get 3D Treatment
The Walls of Derry are to be digitally scanned and documented in 3D as part of a 3-year EU co-funded project.
To celebrate the monument's 400th birthday, the Dublin-based Discovery Programme is giving L'Derry's walls the digital treatment as part of the 3D-ICONS Project.
The Project will focus on the 3D documentation of UNESCO World Heritage monuments and other monuments of outstanding value at European level.
Other heritage monuments getting the digital treatment include Pompeii in Italy and New Grange in the Republic of Ireland.
Mark Lusby, City Walls Heritage Project Coordinator at Holywell Trust, remarked: "We will be showcasing at the Walls 400! History Conference on 6 and 7 April some of the early results obtained so far. We are working with Digital Derry and the Nerve Centre Fab Lab to look at how the data generated by the Discovery Programme can be used for our heritage education programmes and to help entrepreneurs develop new commercial products. The fact that Derry's Walls have been selected is testimony to how their heritage value is perceived at a national and European level."
The Discovery Programme researches Irish archaeology across the island and is core-funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland. It is the Irish partner in the 3D-ICONS Project, which has 16 partners from 11 different countries.
"The Walls of Derry encompass such a large area of the city centre that it is difficult for visitors, in a 45 minute walking tour, to fully appreciate all of the features of the monument," Mr Lusby continued.
"Because they blend into the every-day townscape of Derry, the City Walls can also become almost invisible to locals. Working with the DOE NIEA, we hope to create a dedicated exhibition to Derry's Walls and to use the data generated by the 3D-ICONS Project to create a large-scale physical and virtual reality model of the Walls."

Around a quarter of a million pounds have been earmarked for measures to stabilise Derry walls. Last week's double collapse at Marlborough Terrace and Harding Street in Londonderry has now prompted the NI Environment Minister Alex Attwood (pictured) to approve expenditure of up to £250,000.

Arrest Over Attempted Murder Of Police
Detectives investigating the attempted murder of police in L'Derry last year have arrested a 42-year-old man. It comes after an incident at the City Walls on 11 July 2018. The man was detained today, Monday 22 July, and is currently being questioned by detectives at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.

Plans have been submitted for a new chic hotel in Londonderry, which has been welcomed by the city's tourism agency. The developer's scheme is reportedly a 42-bedroom boutique style hotel, in the heart of the city, beside Derry's walls on Shipquay Place. The complex is said to be one of a number planned for the historic city.
