NIE begin improvement scheme in Newcastle

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) is set to begin a network improvement scheme in residential parts of Newcastle next week at a cost of around £300,000.

The 20-week long project will involve the replacement of 2.7km of 11,000 volt overhead lines with underground cables.

The project is part of a £4.5 million investment in the infrastructure network in the South Down area.

Commenting on the work, Valerie Curran, NIE Customer Relations Manager for the area, said: “The undergrounding of overhead lines is a welcome boost to the electricity network in this area and we look forward to the visual improvement this work will bring. These improvements to the current system will enable one of the fastest growing towns in Northern Ireland to cope with increasing demand for electricity.”

Cabling work will begin on the Bryansford Road. The road will be closed from Spelga Avenue to Tullybrannigan Road junctions for a period of two weeks and motorists are advised to take an alternative route.
