£6.62million On Road Schemes Delivered In Coleraine
Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has commended Roads Service and its contractors for the successful completion of road schemes in 2012/2013 which accounted for a £6.62million investment in the roads infrastructure in Coleraine.
Minister Kennedy said: "In the last financial year,my Department invested over £100million in structural maintenance improving the road infrastructure across Northern Ireland.
"Despite ever increasing demands on budgets, Roads Service invested over £6.62million in the delivering a comprehensive range of road schemes and maintenance work in the Coleraine area.
"Roads Service is using its available resources highly effectively and continues to deliver quality public services in Coleraine Borough Council area and across Northern Ireland."
Bridge Strengthening Works Begin
Works on a major bridge strengthening scheme on (C152) Kilmore Road, Lurgan commenced this week, following the collapse of an existing culvert.
Road Service is replacing the damaged structure and a full closure of the Kilmore Road is in place. All traffic will be diverted onto the (B12) Cornakinneager Road and the (C362) Old Kilmore Road.
The scheme is expected to be completed by 18 May 2013, subject to favourable weather conditions, and the public will be kept informed of any changes.
DUP Criticised For Playing Politics With Remebrance
Alliance Councillor Maire Hendron has criticised the DUP for playing politics with remembrance, after the Party again raised the issue of the Union Flag at the Cenotaph.
The group leader on Belfast City Council said: "I am disappointed the DUP has again raised this issue, especially when the RBL has publicly outlined its opposition to the proposal. This move is clearly about keeping the flag debate on the agenda, but in doing this the DUP has proved it is prepared to play politics with remembrance.
"Changing how the flag flies at the Cenotaph is not only against equality advice, but is also against the wishes of the Royal British Legion (RBL) which made it clear it does not want the Cenotaph politicised during a recent City Hall consultation.
"It is clear from what DUP representatives have said tonight, that they do not respect the right of other parties to have their own position on issues, or the democratic process when decisions are made.
"When it comes to the Union Flag at Belfast City Hall, Alliance stands firm that any changes to the number of days it flies must be determined by the Westminster Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
"The Executive must legislate for the flying of the Union Flag at each Council headquarters, creating an agreed policy for them all."
