Pfizer Plant To Close

Fianna Fáil TD for Cork South Central, Micheál Martin TD, has expressed his disappointment at the announcement that 136 jobs may be lost with the closure of the Pfizer Plant in Little Island.

Pfizer confirmed today that they would seek a buyer for their Little Island plant and move operations to the Ringaskiddy plant.

Deputy Martin commented: "My thoughts are with the 136 workers at Pfizer’s Little Island plant and their families at this difficult time. It is now vitally important that all the relevant stakeholders now work to ensure as many of the 136 jobs as possible are saved.

"Every effort must be made by Pfizer and the various state agencies to seek alternative employment for the employees in the Little Island plant. These highly skilled workers are very much employable and I would hope that jobs can be found in the pharmaceutical industry in Cork.

"The IDA also has a role to play in seeking a buyer for the award winning plant in Little Island. The excellent reputation that Pfizer has in Ireland should help with this sale.

"I would hope that Pfizer can respond to the loss of certain patents by continuing its ground breaking work in the development of biopharmaceutical products that is the envy of the industry."
