Additional Hib vaccine offered to NI children

A campaign has been launched in Northern Ireland today aimed at giving all children aged between 6 months and 4 years an extra dose of Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) vaccine during 2003.

The decision follows a recent small rise in cases of Hib disease throughout the UK.

Hib causes a number of serious illnesses in young children including meningitis and pneumonia.

Speaking at the launch Chief Medical Officer, Dr Henrietta Campbell pointed to the success of the Hib Immunisation Programme, introduced in 1992, in reducing the level of Hib disease.

She said: “Like many new immunisation campaigns this one has been planned at short notice and I am grateful to everyone who has worked hard over the last few months to ensure that we are ready to begin immunising children from today. The campaign will be delivered over the next 4 months by primary care and community trust staff.”

The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety along with the Health Promotion Agency has produced leaflets which will support both parents and health professionals during the campaign.

All parents of children eligible for immunisation will receive a copy of the new Hib leaflets. Information packs for health professionals have also been produced and circulated to all GP’s and health visitors.
