Big Weekend Hailed A Success

35,000 people attended Radio 1's Big Weekend in L'Derry over the weekend, leading the council to brand the event as "an outstanding success for the city".

Mayor Cllr Kevin Campbell said he was "extremely proud of the city" following its hosting of the music event, which saw live performances from acts such as Bruno Mars, Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris.

"It’s been an outstanding weekend for the city," the Mayor said.

"There was such a sense of excitement and expectation and the feedback received has been so positive. The BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend provided us with a superb platform from which to showcase our city.

"Securing the Radio 1 Big Weekend for a second time was a major achievement. It was also the first time the BBC’s flagship music event was outdoors and in a city centre location over three days. For all these reasons everyone is delighted that it was such a success. The strong partnership between the BBC and Derry City Council and the co-operation of a range of city agencies made this event possible and on behalf of everyone I would like to thank everyone involved for their continuous support."

“The partnership with the BBC also provided a great opportunity to positively engage with young people and get communities together. In the run up to the Radio 1 Big Weekend the City hosted the BBC Academy and provided educational opportunities for over 4,000 young people as well as showcasing local talent across the BBC networks."

Mayor Campbell continued: "Hosting a successful event will boost the city’s reputation as a location for events and I am confident this will encourage new audiences to come to the city and enjoy the many other events scheduled for City of Culture 2013 including the Return of Colmcille, Music City and the Fleadh."
