Man Survives West Belfast Shooting

A man has emerged unscathed following a gun attack in west Belfast.

Two men entered the victim's house at Avoca Close in the Turf Lodge area and fired a shot at him.

The attack happened at about 09:30 on Thursday.

The attackers are believed to have left in the direction of the Upper Springfield Road.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the attack or has any information about it to contact them.

Tyrone Gorse Fire Extinguished

A large gorse fire has been extinguished in County Tyrone.

Six appliances and over 50 firefighters tackled the blaze near the Keerin and Dunnamore Roads, between Pomeroy and Omagh.

The fire was burning within a five-mile stretch of gorse, scrub and forest.

The fire was confirmed as being extinguished at about 23:30.

Glenavy Gardener Fined Over Driving Offences

A landscape gardener from Glenavy has been fined £400 and disqualified from driving for insurance and licence offences.

John McAreavey was banned from driving for one month at Magherafelt Magistrate’s Court today.

The 55-year-old, who trades as Sweet Briar Nursery of Chapel Road, Glenavy, was also fined £200.

He was fined a further £100 for causing and permitting the vehicle to be driven by someone who did not hold the correct category of driving licence.

A final £100 was imposed for the vehicle having no tachograph speed recording equipment.

Mr McAreavey was also ordered to pay £19 court costs.

Three Convicted Over Benefit Fraud

Three people were convicted at Craigavon Magistrates court yesterday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

Mary Crowe (60) of Collingwood Drive, Lurgan claimed Income Support and Rates totalling £4,033 while failing to declare capital.

She was given a two month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £62.

Joao Bastos-Viera (42) of Craigwell Avenue, Portadown was fined £75 and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £115.

Alex Hoyle (29) of Victoria Street, Belfast was given a one month prison sentence suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £19 for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance totalling £111.

All are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Man Charged Over Vehicle Hijacking In L'Derry
Police investigating the hijacking of a vehicle in L'Derry have charged a man with a number of offences. The 26-year-old is accused of common assault, driving whilst unfit and using a motor vehicle without insurance, in relation to a hijacking in the city on Monday 04 March. He is due to appear at L'Derry Magistrates Court today, 06 March.

Two Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
Two people were convicted at Belfast Magistrates court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to. Gerard Browne, 29, of Summerhill Drive, Belfast was given 12 months probation and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Incapacity Benefit totalling £377.
