350 Charged In Operation Dulcet

A total of 350 people have been charged, reported to the PPS or recommended for discretionary disposal by detectives working on Operation Dulcet.

Discretionary disposal refers to non court diversions such as advice and warning or community reparation.

Operation Dulcet, set up in the wake of the union flag protests across Northern Ireland, has so far recorded a total of 647 offences.

The protests began in December last year, after Belfast City Council voted to restrict the flying of the union flag above City Hall.

Unionists and loyalists described the decision as an attack on their culture.

Regular protests have been staged in protest at the decision. While most have been peaceful, many have resulted in bricks, bottles, fireworks, golf balls and missiles being thrown at both police officers and at nationalists from the Short Strand area.

184 people have been involved in rioting or disorderly behaviour.

210 people participated in an unnotified procession or obstructive sitting.

141 people have been charged for multiple offences.

The PSNI statistics are valid as from 18 June 2013.
