Call For Govt To Do The Right Thing For Waterford Crystal Workers
Speaking in Leinster House ahead of today's planned protest by Waterford Crystal workers at the Dáil, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Workers' Rights, Senator David Cullinane referred to the need for workers to campaign and protest outside Dáil Éireann to get what they are legally entitled to as disgraceful.
Senator Cullinane said: "Why the Government is dragging its feet on this issue is simply beyond me.
"This is a clear-cut case and there is no reason why the Government should not immediately meet with the workers and ensure speedy compensations for all those concerned.
"The implications of the European Court of Justice Judgement are clear.
"The Court found that Ireland is in serious breach of its obligations and that it had failed under Article 8 of the Directive whereby employees are entitled to receive fifty percent of their pension benefits out of any accrued pension scheme for which they had contributed.
"The failure since 2007 by successive Irish governments to insert this EU ruling into Irish law is anti-worker.
"This ruling is simply a baseline in terms of protection for employees who through no fault of their own find themselves out of work.
"The government must do the right thing by the Waterford Crystal Workers and immediately ensure they receive speedy and just compensation, as they are entitled to by law."

Every effort will be made by the Government to find new jobs for hundreds of Waterford Crystal employees facing redundancy, Minister for Finance Brian Cowen has told the Dáil. Tánaiste Mr Cowen, who was deputising for the Taoiseach, said the job losses were trade-related and inevitable.
