SF call for calm ahead of marching season
Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly has called for calm across Belfast's numerous interface areas as the forthcoming marching season approaches.
Mr Kelly, who is a councillor in north Belfast which has its numerous interface problems in recent months, said the cancellation of elections last month by Prime Minister Tony Blair had created a political vacuum which opponents of the peace process would attempt to fill.
He added: "The lives of communities living on sectarian interfaces has been made intolerable over recent years by sectarian conflict. There is a particular onus on political, community and church leaders to play an active and calming role in the weeks and months ahead.
"Sinn Fein's focus in the time ahead is to ensure a calm summer both in the interests of those who have to live in these areas but also in the interest of the wider peace process.
"We would hope that other pro-agreement parties will show the same determination and where necessary, presence on the streets."

Stormont has been urged to provide financial aid to fishermen unable to work due to the recent bad weather. Around £20,000 in emergency payments have been paid out by Fisherman's Mission, a charity established to support fishing families facing financial hardship.

Stranded boys rescued by lifeboat near Millisle
Two boys have been rescued off the Co Down coast after they became stranded on rocks on the Ards Peninsula. The boys, aged 12 and 14, got into trouble on Wednesday off the beach at Millisle but were eventually picked up by a Donaghadee lifeboat at around 10.30pm. The teenagers were stranded on rocks which had been surrounded by the incoming tide.
