Fire Service Issues Empty Building Warning
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) has issued a warning about the dangers of derelict and unused building in the region, UTV has said.
It addresses the dangers of young people playing in the disused properties and comes after firefighters had to deal with a blaze at a former factory in Newtownabbey.
The factory, located in the Glenville Road area, was reported on fire around 8.30pm on Saturday night. It took the 25-man crew almost two hours to extinguish the blaze.
The fire left one building destroyed and another badly smoke damaged.
Kenny McEwan, station commander for the Glengormley area, described the incident as "relatively minor".
He added: "There is no way to be sure what caused the fire at this stage, but I can't see any other way that it could have started other than from kids playing in the building.
"There are very real dangers for children or young people who use derelict buildings or disused factories as a playground over the summer months.
"Apart from the dangers of starting fires, there is also a lot of old equipment or unsafe structures they could be badly hurt on.
"And if a fire does get out of control there is a danger they could be trapped in the building and unable to get to safety.
"I would urge anyone to stay well away from any derelict building over the summer - the risk to life is just too great."
Police are investigating the blaze, saying the fire was suspicious.

Pat Jennings & NIFRS Issue Fire Safety Warning
Legendary Northern Ireland goalkeeper Pat Jennings has joined the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service to send a message regarding the heightened risk of fire for the over 50s. According to the NIRFS, 87% of deaths from accidental house fires in the last four years were people aged 50 and over.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

An English-born firefighter has been awarded €5,000 in compensation for discrimination by Limerick City Council. An Equality Tribunal heard Martin Mannering, now living in Cappamore, Co Limerick was left a note to leave his job because he was no longer "in Middlesbrough".
