17 Rescued From Lough Neagh

17 people have been rescued from Lough Neagh after their canoes came into difficulty while on the water.

Two adults and a group of young people, some of whom were as young as 14, were rescued on Wednesday evening.

An alert was raised near Ardboe in County Tyrone. Lifeboats, an ambulance and a police helicopter attended the scene.

Yesterday evening the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service tweeted: "NIAS have taken 9 children 1 adult to Antrim Hospital after incident on Lough Neagh with slight exposure. Coastguard brought them to shore."

The incident began when seven canoes being manned by the group became stranded on Blacker's Rock. A member of the team who was on shore contacted the emergency services, but then came into difficulty himself.

He was found by the police helicopter and helped to safety by Kinnego Coastguard Rescue officers.
