L'Derry Welcomes Another Record Hotel Month
Hotel figures for L'Derry during June have indicated another record month for the city, with an 11% increase on the figures for the same period last year.
Mayor Martin Reilly has welcomed the hotel occupancy figures, which were the highest monthly figures ever recorded for the period.
He said the release of the figures by the Derry Visitor and Convention Bureau were in keeping with the rates recorded this year to date.
The increase has come as the city celebrates its year as the first ever UK City of Culture.
"This trend we are experiencing is a welcomed boost for the hotel, service and tourism industry, an occupancy rate of almost 85% recorded for the month of June relates to an 11% increase on the figures for the same period last year," Mayor Reilly said.
"This is testament to a number of organisations who are working together to get the message out, showcase our city, its events, people and new talent to a wide and varied audience. This sector and city as a whole is thriving and to date we are delighted by the significant social and economic benefits we are experiencing as a result.
"I would like to extend my congratulations to the agencies for their hard work and dedication in this accomplishment. In anticipation of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann this month when will see an extra 300,000 visitors to the city from 11-18 August we are at 100% occupancy rate for the duration of the event.
"I have no doubt by continued effort we can maximise this success for the remainder of 2013 with a number of world class events still to come such as The Walled City Tattoo, Banks of the Foyle Halloween Carnival, Lumiere and the Turner Prize. It is vital that with continued effort and enthusiasm we can build on the legacy of our city of culture status this year for future years and generations to come."

The Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel has challenged claims that the Council is not supporting St Patrick’s Day in Belfast. It follows a protest outside Belfast City Hall last week by the St Patrick's Carnival Committee who claim the Council isn't funding this year's event at the City Hall.
