Belfast gets new city centre walkway
A landscaped walkway that transforms the appearance of a run-down area on the edge of Belfast’s city centre has been officially opened today.
College Walk, located at College Avenue and Kings Street Mews, was created in a £50,000 project led by the department’s Belfast Regeneration Office in partnership with the Roads Service, Belfast City Council and SHAC, the student housing association.
The Walk features sculpted steel silhouettes and open grass areas together with existing and newly planted trees to replace the previously screened area which was well known for its under-age drinking problem.
Speaking at the ceremony today, Mr McGrath said: "This scheme is an excellent example of working in partnership both within and beyond the Public Sector. It was born out of a need to deter vandalism and anti-social behaviour that the local community and businesses suffered.
"The appearance of the city centre, together with its cleanliness and safety, can make a lasting impression on visitors. This scheme portrays a positive image of the city both for visitors and the local community."
Mr McGrath said the new Walk would complement other developments going on in the area such as the new Belfast Institute For Higher Education (BIFHE) buildings, the redevelopment of the Black Taxi site at King Street and two proposed hotel developments at King Street and College Avenue.

Primark Donates £500,000 To Support Businesses Affected By Fire
Retailer Primark is donating £500,000 to Belfast City Council's City Recovery Investment Fund. The fund is being set up after a number of businesses have been severely affected by the fire at the Bank Buildings which happened over three weeks ago. A cordon remains in place and 14 firms have been closed for up to four months.

St Patrick's Day event has support of BCC says councillor
The Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Good Relations Steering Panel has challenged claims that the Council is not supporting St Patrick’s Day in Belfast. It follows a protest outside Belfast City Hall last week by the St Patrick's Carnival Committee who claim the Council isn't funding this year's event at the City Hall.

Belfast 'Twelfth' Was Shopping Hit
Initial feedback on the commercial impact of Belfast shops being open over the traditional 'Twelfth' celebration has been excellent. This year's event, titled 'Orangefest' on 13 July witnessed Belfast city centre shops opening on the day of the parades for the first time.
