'Unsafe' Belfast Bridge Opens After £200k Renewal
A 50-year-old bridge in Belfast's Clement Wilson Park has been refurbished to the tune of £200,000 after it was declared unsafe.
The new John Luke Bridge is now open for walkers and cyclists to use.
The project, located at New Forge Lane close to the Lock Keeper's Cottage, is part of Belfast City Council's £150m Investment Programme.
The new bridge replaces the old structure, which had been on the site for more than 50 years. It was closed last December after an engineer's report found corrosion had made the bridge unsafe.
The replacement is the latest project delivered as part of the council's Investment Programme.
Dunville Park reopened to the public in July following a £2m refurbishment, Woodvale Park is due to reopen tomorrow after another £2m of work, and construction is currently underway on a new £1.8m tourist information centre opposite City Hall.
Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir said: "We know that walkers and cyclists have been waiting eagerly for this bridge to come back into use and we're delighted that the work has been completed ahead of schedule, giving people plenty of time to enjoy this popular park throughout the rest of the summer.
"The new bridge uses an innovative butterfly design to spread the load when the crossing is in use, and it looks fantastic.
"We have decided to name it after the artist John Luke because he is famous for his watercolours of the River Lagan and, in addition, we have a wonderful mural which he also painted in the rotunda in City Hall," the Lord Mayor said.

Officer: 'Only Option Was To Shoot'
A police officer has told an inquest he had no option but to shoot when he was confronted with a robber at a petrol station. 29-year-old Marc Alexander Ringland died in hospital after being shot in the chest by the officer. He had carried out the robbery at a petrol station on the Albert bridge Road in east Belfast last February.

Vandals have attacked a church in east Belfast, causing substantial damage to stained glass windows. The incident happened at the Albert Bridge Congregational Church on the Woodstock Link, however, the attack is not thought to have had a sectarian motive.

An investigation has launched after a three-year-old boy died following an accident involving a car near his home in Co Armagh. The collision occurred on the Boghead Bridge Road, Aghalee, just outside Lurgan on Tuesday, 25 May. The toddler was treated at the scene before being taken to Craigavon Area Hospital.
