Homes Evacuated During Security Alert

A number of residents have been evacuated from their homes during a security alert in north Belfast.

Following reports of a suspicious vehicle, the Crumlin Road was closed between the Ardoyne shops and the Oldpark Road as examinations were carried out.

A number of other roads in the vicinity were also closed leading to traffic disruption.

Shortly after 8am this morning (Tuesday) a controlled explosion was carried out on the vehicle, with most roads reopening by 9am.

The Hillview Road area remains closed at this time.

Brian Kingston, who is Belfast Councillor for the Greater Shankill area, said around 40 residents had to leave their homes around 5am.

He is quoted by UTV as saying: "It seems a car was abandoned in the middle of the road with its hazard warning lights at around 3.40am on Tuesday morning on the Hillview Road off the Crumlin Road.

"Residents were not evacuated straight away but I understand a suspicious object - thought to be a beer keg - was then noticed in the back of the car by police which has resulted in the security alert and residents were evacuated around 5am from houses on the Crumlin Road and Tenant Street."
