£1.6m Investment For Play And Leisure
£1.6m is to be invested in enhancing play and leisure opportunities for children and young people in Northern Ireland.
Speaking at the opening of the Playboard annual conference in Belfast, Junior Ministers Johnathon Bell and Jennifer McCann said the funding would be provided over three years under the Executive’s 'Delivering Social Change Framework'.
PlayBoard is the leading agency for the development and promotion of children and young people's play in Northern Ireland.
Junior Minister Jonathan Bell said: "The theme of today’s conference is driving the play agenda. This has a strong resonance with the Executive as we share the same drive and determination to improve the lives of children and young people.
"This additional funding is yet another example of how the Executive is investing in, and co-ordinating, strategic key actions across departments to improve children and young people’s health, well-being and life opportunities."
Junior Minister Jennifer McCann said: "The Executive wants to achieve much greater awareness of the value of play and leisure and emphasise that it is a vital ingredient in the development of children and their transition to adulthood.
"This funding will help ensure that everyone is aware of the benefits of play, achieve greater local access to play spaces and make planning and support for play central to the thinking of our local councils."
Delegates at the conference were asked to contribute ideas towards the projects to be taken forward with the funding.
Jonathan Bell said: "The ideas generated today will help us determine the key activities we need to take forward to ensure we make big changes to the extent to which children and young people engage in and enjoy play and leisure."
Jennifer McCann added: "What we learn from today will not only shape the present but will have a lasting legacy for the adults of the future. I commend Playboard for their commitment and determination to improve the lives of our greatest asset; our children."
