NIE call in PSNI after substation vandalism

Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) called in the police today after an act of "deliberate vandalism" occurred at a local electricty supply substation in Killyleagh.

NIE branded the state of the substation as “a disgrace” following a site visit last week which revealed an unprecedented amount of household rubbish which NIE claimed had been deliberately dumped in the grounds of the substation.

Commenting on the state of the grounds, NIE Customer Relations Manager Valerie Curran said: “We maintain our network of substations to ensure a clean environment for the local community, often working with community groups and primary schools to paint the substations. Our staff patrol the substations and twice a year we spray weeds and remove any rubbish.

"However, this is deliberate vandalism, including damage to the gate and fencing which could cause a hazard to the local community and to NIE staff who need access to the substation during a loss of electricity supplies in the area.

“We are taking steps to clear the rubbish this week but would appeal to the local community to keep the substation clear from any dumping in future. This is an environmental hazard which can be easily avoided.

NIE and the PSNI have called on anyone with information on such activity to contact NIE on 08457 643 643 or a local PSNI office.
