NI waterways get £2m boost for recreational activities
Over £2 million is to be made available by the Government to boost angling and water-based recreational facilities in Northern Ireland.
NIO Minister Angela Smith announced her intention to invite businesses and organisations to apply for grant aid to continue the work for such developments.
Announcing the availability of the funding, the second tranche of the £4.8 million being made available under the Water Based Tourism Measure of the Peace II Programme, the Minister said: "Northern Ireland’s lakes and rivers have enormous potential for improving the quality of our lives as well as making a positive contribution to the economy and this special funding is being used to develop and capitalise on these natural resources.
"On 4 March, I announced the outcome of the first tranche of funding under this Programme which saw 36 organisations being allocated a total of £2.7 million. My Department is now inviting applications for the remainder of this money to enable the successful applicants to improve angling, develop the potential of our inland waterways and provide related visitor facilities.
The Minister said she was confident that these measures would help increase visitor numbers to the Province and encourage local people to spend more time enjoying the countryside.
Application forms for the second tranche of funding are available from www.eugrants.org with a closing date for receipt on 31 August 2003.
