October 'Warmer, Wetter And Brighter'
This year Northern Ireland experienced an October that was warmer, wetter and brighter than average.
The news was announced by the Armagh Observatory this week and found that the mean monthly temperature was 11.7 degrees Celsius, which is slightly more than one and a half a degrees Celsius warmer than the most recent 30-year average.
Last month was the warmest October since 2007, the Observatory said.
The warmest day, with a maximum temperature of 20.1 degrees Celsius, occurred on the 6th, which was the warmest October day at Armagh since 1 October 2002, which had the same maximum temperature.
The coldest air temperature was 0.7 degrees Celsius, which occurred on the morning of the 11th. There were eight nights with grass frost, the coldest (-6.9 degrees Celsius) also occurring on the morning of the 11th.
Total precipitation amounted to 129.1mm, which is approximately 50% more than the most recent 30-year (1981–2010) monthly average for October. The wettest day was the 21st when 26.8 mm fell.
The number of hours of sunshine was 105.8, that is, approximately 17% more than the most recent 30-year average for October.
The Armagh Observatory has been recording the weather at Armagh since 1795.

Further Round Of Cold Weather Payments To Be Made
The latest spell of cold weather has triggered a further round of Cold Weather Payments for parts of Northern Ireland. A further £1 million will be paid automatically to approximately 43,000 people who qualify for the payment and are living in the postcode areas covered by the Met Office's Katesbridge and Glenanne weather stations.

Rise In Year-Long Unemployed
The number of people unemployed for one year or more in Northern Ireland rose 8.2 % to 55.6% over the period October - December 2014, according to the latest labour market figures. The unemployment rate for 18-24 year olds was 17.8%, down 5.4% over the year, compared to the UK average rate of 14.2%.

Economy Minister Dr Caoimhe Archibald has confirmed that around 860,000 households in Northern Ireland will receive a £63 reduction on their electricity bills from 6 October. The Household Electricity Discount will be applied automatically by electricity suppliers.

SSE Airtricity To Raise Gas Tariff By 19.2% From October
SSE Airtricity will lift its gas tariff by 19.2% from 1 October 2026. The rise will affect roughly 204,000 domestic customers across the Greater Belfast and West gas networks, as well as around 4,500 small commercial customers. For a typical household, the change will add about £174 a year to bills for those on credit meters.
