'Experimental' South Belfast Traffic Scheme Announced
An "experimental" traffic management scheme is to be introduced in south Belfast to facilitate traders in the area.
Following representation from a number of quarters that the existing restrictions are having a detrimental impact on business, the Department for Regional Development has been examining the options available to address the issue.
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has given the go-ahead for the new scheme on parts of Lisburn Road, Malone Road and Stranmillis Road.
Danny Kennedy said: "Recent consultation shows that the two lanes for traffic flow towards Belfast city centre during the morning peak traffic period should remain unchanged, and two lanes should also be provided for traffic leaving the city in the afternoon.
"The proposed change will affect the traffic lanes in the opposite direction at the respective times with the trial seeing the current clearway restriction relaxed."
The Department is now in the final legislative stages for the introduction of the scheme. It may be modified, suspended or revoked at anytime during the trial period to the end of six months from the date on which it comes into force.
