Princess Anne Visits Lagan Valley Midwifery Unit

Princess Anne visited Northern Ireland yesterday to give her seal of approval to the Lagan Valley Hospital's Midwifery Unit (MLU).

The Princess Royal met with past and present senior Royal College of Midwifery representatives and spoke to midwives and a mother who gave birth a couple of days ago.

Lagan Valley Hospital currently provides a 24-hour consultant-led obstetric service for low to medium-risk patients and provides antenatal and postnatal care for more than 1,400 women each year.

Health Minister Edwin Poots said: "I would like to welcome HRH The Princess Royal, who is the Patron of the Royal College of Midwifery, to the Lagan Valley Hospital today. It is a great opportunity for HRH to witness firsthand the excellent work and dedication of the staff at the hospital.

"Since its opening the MLU at the Lagan Valley Hospital has seen 600 births. It is an excellent facility that offers new choices for women with low risk pregnancies where they can give birth in a 'home from home' environment led by skilled midwives who they have come to know.

"I would like to thank all the staff at Lagan Valley for their continuing hard work and commitment in providing this professional service for the people of Lisburn and surrounding areas."
