UUP ruling executive meet to discuss RIR

The Ulster Unionist Party's ruling executive was meeting in Belfast today to discuss the future of the Royal Irish Regiment's three home battalions which has caused a split in the party.

Leader David Trimble has already demanded clarification from the government over the reports that the Army plans to disband the battalions once demilitarisation proposals in the recent British-Irish joint declaration are fully implemented.

Around 3,000 soldier's could be affected if the Government decide to scrap the RIR's home batallions.

Today's meeting between the 110-strong executive follows criticism from Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson who is annoyed that the proposals are linked to the British-Irish joint declaration.

The UUP plan to hold a meeting of the party's ruling council in ten days time to will deal with a motion rejecting the proposals linked to the declaration.
