£25k Road Improvement Scheme For Newtownhamilton

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has announced the start of a £250,000 major resurfacing scheme on Blaney Road, Newtownhamilton.

Preparatory works for the project start this week in the vicinity of Tullygleasy Road.

Minister Kennedy said: "The scheme will improve the quality of the road surface and improve the drainage on this stretch of road."

To help minimise any inconvenience to the travelling public and local businesses this scheme is programmed to be completed using manual traffic control measures for preparation work and local road closures for resurfacing work.

The scheme is expected to be completed before Christmas.

Women Stop Would-Be Car Hijacker In Belfast

Two women reportedly foiled a would-be car hijacker's plans after fighting with him until police arrived.

The women had parked in the College Square North area of Belfast's city centre. They were looking for change for a meter when a man pushed past and jumped into the driver's seat. He tried to start the vehicle but the women grabbed him and wrestled with him, alerting a passing police patrol.

Two officers were attempted to arrest the suspect and were injured in an ensuing altercation.

A 23-year-old man was detained by police on suspicion of attempted hijacking, assaulting police, resisting police and attempted criminal damage.

Police said the women were not injured in the incident, but had been left badly shaken.

Arrests Made Over Teenage Shooting

Police have said two men have been arrested in relation to the shooting of a 15-year-old boy in Coleraine earlier this month.

On 18 November, three masked men entered a house at Glebe Avenue in the area just before 5am. They shot the teenager in both legs.

It is understood one of the men was also carrying a baseball bat.

Following the attack, the victim was taken to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine before being transferred to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The men arrested, understood to be aged 35 and 39, were detained in the Harpur's Hill area of Coleraine on Tuesday in connection with recent paramilitary style attacks in the town, as well as north Antrim.

They are currently being questioned at Antrim Serious Crime Suite.
