Attwood welcomes rioting reforms

SDLP policing spokesperson, Alex Attwood has welcomed plans by the Government to introduce tougher penalties for people suspected of being involved in rioting.

The laws, which the NIO said will be introduced this week, will see new legislation allow police to arrest someone suspected of riotous behaviour without first obtaining a warrant.

The maximum sentence for the offence will also increase from six months to one year.

Mr Attwood said: "The answer to many street disturbances is better policing, more severe penalties, active mediation and proper leadership. All elements are needed to calm public disorder and ease tensions.

"Today's announcements of arrest for rioting without warrant, harsher rioting penalties and tougher bail for rioters can help, if the new powers are used properly."

The West Belfast representative also said that while the use of the law and the courts was not an alternative to communities working together to get people of the streets, the new measure would be useful.

The new legislation will see people who fail to surrender themselves to custody facing up to three months in jail and a fine of £5,000.

Police will also be allowed to arrest people who breach bail conditions.
