Haass Suggests 'Neutral' NI Flag

Dr Richard Haass has raised the suggestion of a new, neutral flag for Northern Ireland.

The former US peace envoy is currently chairing talks in Northern Ireland on issues of conflict surrounding flags, emblems and the past.

He is due to return to Belfast next week, faced with a self-imposed end-of-year deadline to find a concrete solution to the problems facing post-Troubles Northern Ireland.

"What might a process to design and validate a new NI flag look like?" he said. "What role might such a flag play in civic life?"

Dr Haass has also asked questions of politicians regarding the flying of flags generally, including where they should be flown and how a 'code of conduct' might work.

Many of the issues currently being dealt with have come to the fore since loyalists began protesting against a Belfast City Council decision to restrict the flying of the union flag at City Hall on 3 December last year.
