NI unemployment figures rise
Unemployment figures for Northern Ireland have shown a slight rise according to latest Labour Force figures released today.
The figures show that the number of people claiming unemployment benefit rose by 800 last month to 35,100 (4.4% of the workforce).
However, Northern Ireland's seasonally adjusted unemployment numbers are still at their lowest rate ever, standing at an estimated 41,000 or 5.1% in the period February – April 2003.
Meanwhile, employment figures for March 2003 stand at 668,190, a rise of 730 since December 2002.
Commenting on the figures, Enterprise Minister Ian Pearson said: “Employment potential remains relatively strong in Northern Ireland, but clearly there are difficulties being experienced in certain sectors of the manufacturing industry where just over 80% of all redundancies have occurred over the past year.
"Nevertheless, there is still a fall of 2,000 in unemployment compared with last year and while we have worked hard to develop and maintain a buoyant regional economy, this is clear evidence that our determined efforts must never stop.
Northern Ireland's unemployment figures are also lower than five other UK regions: London (7.1%), North East (6.5%), West Midlands (6.0%), Scotland (5.8%), Yorkshire & the Humber (5.3%) and identical to the UK as a whole.
