Proposed NI Super Councils Revealed

The final recommendations for 11 new so-called 'super councils' for Northern Ireland, have been published.

It has been reported that the 26 district councils currently in place.

They will have responsibility for local planning, housing repairs and demolition.

Dubbed the Local Government Bill, officials hope it will make it through all the necessary stages by February 2014, with elections to the new councils expected to be held in May.

The new super councils are:
  • Antrim and Newtownabbey
  • Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon
  • Belfast
  • Causeway Coast and Glens
  • Derry and Strabane
  • Fermanagh and Omagh
  • Lisburn and Castlereagh
  • Mid and East Antrim
  • Mid Ulster
  • Newry, Mourne and Down
  • North Down and Ards.
