Belfast prepares for Team USA visit
Belfast City Council is making final preparations to extend a warm welcome to a very special group of athletes.
Next week, Belfast will be acting as Host City to almost 1,300 athletes and support staff from Team USA, who will be visiting Ireland for the 11th Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin.
A total of around 7,000 athletes from 160 nations will be taking part in the Games, which are being held outside the United States for the first time.
Team USA will arrive on board three specially chartered Jumbo Jets, which will touch down at Belfast International Airport on Monday, when a massive logistical operation, which has been months in the planning, will swing into action.
Commenting on the visit, Lord Mayor of Belfast, Martin Morgan said: “Belfast City Council has taken a proactive lead in the preparations for the visit of Team USA, and has been working with a variety of agencies and individuals across the City to ensure that the athletes and their support staff receive the warmest possible welcome.
“Belfast has close historical, cultural and economic ties with the United States, and it is therefore more than appropriate that the City should host Team USA as they make their final preparations for this very special sporting occasion."
The team, the majority of whom will be accommodated at Queen’s University and Stranmillis College, will spend five days next week acclimatizing, training and being entertained, prior to travelling to Dublin to participate in the Games, which start on Saturday June 21.
