Fireworks Injuries Hit Lowest Level On Record

Injuries caused by fireworks in Northern Ireland in 2013 were at the lowest level since records began, according to the Department of Health.

New figures released by the department show that during the Halloween 2013 period, six people reported to an emergency care department with a firework related injury. This was eight fewer than in 2012.

Two of the six persons injured were aged under 18. All six of the people injured were male.

The six people attending emergency care had a total of six firework related injuries. The most common site of injury was to the face, head or neck.

Halloween Fireworks' Injuries Rising
Injuries caused by fireworks in NI over Halloween increased this year, with more casualties reported - with many of the incidents involving children. Figures from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) on Wednesday revealed that almost 50 people reported to an emergency care department with a firework related injury.

NI Unemployment Rate Increases
The Northern Ireland unemployment rate continues to rise, according to figures release today by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA). Unemployment stood at 7.5% for the period August - October 2013, indicating an increase of 0.6% on the previous quarter and a fall of 0.3% on a year ago.

Two People Arrested Over Basil McAfee Murder
Two people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a man in north Belfast. Basil McAfee's body was found at his home in the Henderson Avenue area on Friday, 20 December, 2013. He was attacked with an axe and a knife. Six people have previously been arrested in connection with the murder.

Pedestrian killed on Westlink
A pedestrian was killed on the Westlink at around 1.30am on Thursday morning. The Westlink, which was closed for approximately six hours, has now been reopened. The man's name has not yet been released. Elsewhere, four people have been injured following a collision on the M1 which involved two lorries and a car.
